Airport Facts & Information
For years, the airport was owned and operated by the city of Chattanooga. On July 1, 1985, ownership was transferred to the Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport Authority. The Airport Authority is made up of nine members serving staggered terms. The Authority board sets the overall policy for the operation of the airport. Each member of the board is appointed by the Mayor and approved by the City Council. A full time professional staff carries out the policy and maintains the facility. There are approximately fifty employees providing administration, maintenance, and public safety service.
The airport is comprised of about 1100 acres. It has two runways. The main runway 2-20 is 7400' long and is the one generally used by commercial aircraft. The second runway is 15-33. It is 5000' long. Runways are numbered based upon their direction. Thus Runway 2-20 runs in a line on a compass roughly from 20 degrees, or NNE to SSW.
The first terminal building was constructed in the 1930's with a significant addition in the mid-1950's. In 1964 a new modern terminal was opened. It served the community until the current terminal was constructed in 1991-92. The old terminal had approximately 63,000 sq. ft. The new facility has 126,000 sq. ft. and can be easily expanded.
