About the Gilroy Garlic Festival



Gilroy is the garlic capital of the USA and at this festival the fragrant bulb is incorporated into every possible offering - a garlic fan's paradise.

The festival originated as the brainchild of one Dr Rudy Melone, now sadly deceased. In 1978, when Melone read an article describing Arleux, France as "Garlic Capital of the World", he decided that Gilroy deserved the title instead. Thus, in 1979 the first Gilroy Garlic Festival took place, and a phenomenon was born.
