If you can't beat the snow, join it! That could be the motto of the Winter Carnival in St Paul, Minnesota, which, along with twin city Minneapolis, is probably the snowiest big city in the US. After nearly 120 years of practice, St Paulers know how to make the best of the white stuff.

The Winter Carnival dates back to 1886, making it one of America's oldest civic festivities. Snow and ice sculpture looms large, both literally and figuratively, as teams compete to produce the most beautiful figures with 20 blocks of ice and 48 hours to carve them.
